Tohoku, a region of Japan’s Honshu Island, is known for its volcanoes, mountainous terrain and skiing. It's home to the tiny, pine-covered islets of Matsushima Bay, and Lake Towada, a huge crater lake renowned for its bright-blue color and surrounding forests. Tohoku's biggest city is Sendai, site of the Osaki Hachimangu Shinto shrine and ornate Zuihoden, the tomb of feudal lord Date Masamune.




Takayama is a city in Japan's mountainous Gifu Prefecture. The narrow streets of its Sanmachi Suji historic district are lined with wooden merchants’ houses dating to the Edo Period, along with many small museums. The city is famed for its biannual Takayama Festival, going back to at least the mid-1600s, celebrating spring and fall with parades featuring ornate, gilded floats and puppet shows.

WHAT DO JAPANESE PEOPLE WEAR? There are typically two types of clothing worn in  Japan : traditional clothing known as  Japanese clothing  ( 和服 ,  wafuku ) , including the national dress of Japan, the  kimono , and  Western clothing  ( 洋服 ,  yōfuku ) , which encompasses all else not recognised as either national dress or the dress of another country. Traditional Japanese fashion represents a long-standing history of traditional culture, encompassing colour palettes developed in the  Heian period , silhouettes  adopted  from  Tang dynasty  clothing and cultural traditions, motifs taken from  Japanese culture ,  nature  and  traditional literature , the use of types of  silk  for some clothing, and styles of wearing primarily fully-developed by the end of the  Edo period .
